Alicia Kobasic

Writer. Music Lover. Cat Enthusiast.

I have had a passion for music and writing since a young age. As a child I wrote short stories and ‘songs’ to be read and performed at family functions.. While in school, I took honors and advanced placement English courses, creative writing and become editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper. I was a One Direction obsessed fangirl turned pop punk and alternative rock fan who can’t attend enough concerts. Once I realized I could combine my love of music and writing with a career in music journalism, my heart was set. While I am still working towards my dream career, I’ve had many hands on experiences that have helped me develop not only my writing styles, but additional skills I am excited to bring to my next career step.

At Bowling Green State University (BGSU), I received a Bachelor of Science in Journalism, and a minor in Popular Culture. I was also a member of the Honors College . For my final thesis, I explored popular culture’s affect on popular music through a self-produced podcast. During my time at BGSU I was also the promotions director the on-campus radio stations WBGU-FM and Falcon Radio, as well as a contributor to the campus newspaper the BG News.

I completed an editorial internship with the media company Blendtw. During my internship I wrote over 20 articles, many focused around recommending gifts to different groups of people. By doing so I learned how to incorporate SEO keywords and affiliate links into pieces.

Jeans email that has copy that speaks to the different styles and fits of jeans we have

Email body copy about outerwear before a winter storm was scheduled to arrive

While writing for Picture This Post, I relaunched the music review section. I developed the style guide, contacted writers who were interested in writing music reviews, and created a PR list to received press releases about upcoming releases.

Following graduation, I accepted a position as a freelance copywriter for rue21 in September 2022. During my time as a copywriter I worked in both marketing and e-commerce. I started out mainly focused in on the marketing side. I assisted in writing social media captions, email subject lines, pre-headers, and body copy, and various other marketing projects .This included researching the country artist Kane Brown in order to provide copy for his exclusive collection with rue21.

By the end of my time at rue21, I was mainly involved with product copy. I wrote product descriptions for every product that would go on the website, worked with cross channel partners to launch the online exclusive graphics shop, audit the site to make sure product copy was all uploaded correctly, and update copy as needed.

As I am moving towards my goal of working in music journalism, I’ve had the chance to work on The In-Crowd Zine. This is an online entertainment zine that was started by my lovely friend and fellow BGSU alum Penny Rae Hawkins. They brought me on as a music manager and contributing writer. While working on the zine, I’ve had the chance to interview bands and artists, review music and concerts, photograph concerts with media passes, and cover tour and album announcements. While we are a small team, we are mighty.

I am excited to see where my career takes me in the future. While things may seem unknown at the moment, I know great things are ahead. And one things for sure, it will be filled with writing and music.
